**The 2026 Spring wrecking season kicks off with a bang! A nice weather window in the first nine days of March allowed Silver Halo Charters to complete four offshore wrecking trips in quick succession.**
**Despite some tough sea conditions with three of the four trips dealing with massive tides and Easterly winds it was still the JOKER Jigs that were the standout fish producers, with the SLAMMER, COBRA and IMP all getting time in the water.**

Cobra: Very similar actions and benefits to that of the Slammer, but with a bit more flutter and flash!

A close 2nd to the Slammer for it’s streamline quick dropping profile.
Also a highly versatile ‘mixed pitch’ jig but with a little more drag and rod loading, so slightly less smooth on the long fast lifts.

Shorter and wider than the Slammer and Cobra but still fairly streamline.
A more typical slow pitch profile providing a smaller bite size chunk to the more fussy fish.
It’s drop in speed is slower and loads the rod slightly more but it has an excellent flutter.

It’s benefits are it’s chompable size and excellent flutter and short slides.
The downside is, it’ll stream away from you a bit more quickly in tougher conditions, therefore it’s useage is more on the easier days without too much breeze.
**HOW TO FISH?**
It’s less of a ‘mixed pitch’ jig and more of a slow jig so it’s shorter rhythms and long slow lifts and little twitches that get the most hits. However, it will work up through the water column well with short fast pitches.
It’s similar to the Mayhem jig so avoid using the long fast lifts.

Mayhem: The least streamline of the current JOKER range but it produces the most intense of flutters. Deadly for bass!
**WHICH STYLE?**
The least streamline of the current JOKER range but it produces the most intense of flutters.
Due to its anglular shape and blunt head it loads the rod a lot for it’s weight and only punches and slides short distances.
The plus sides, it’ll swerve and dart erratically and drop back with the best flutter you’ll find anywhere.
**WHEN & WHY?**
We’ve found the Mayhem so good that the weight range has been quickly expanded so we can use it more often!
Best on easier days when the boats not getting pushed of it’s drift.
The reason you’ll use this jig is for its bite sized profile and excellent flutter, both are key when fish like bass are not feeding hard. This jig will get hits when live bait is stuggling!
**HOW TO FISH?**
Very similar to the IMP, so medium and long slow lifts and fall backs followed by little twitches get the best results.
If fish are present and need more encouragement, it works well with short quick pitches up through the water column.
It’s the best bass jig I know of and ALL the JOKER jigs will catch bass!

### Skipper Matt’s Deep Dive into Slow and Mixed Pitch Jigging (15 minute read)
### Overview
Productive Slow Pitch Jigging is effectively a system made up of many parts. It’s a game of fine tuning and adapting, getting all the parts to work together to create the best possible action from your jig and making sure you’re doing that whilst your jig is in full view of any fish. Although it’s important, it’s not just about the quality of the tackle you own or even how you use it, it’s also about good skippering, boat position and timings!
As far as the tackle goes, I believe the jig is the first piece of the system. The right jig for the job will vary through each day as the depths, weather conditions and tides change. The shape and weight of the jig needs to be suitable to work properly in those conditions, the rest of your gear (particularly the rod and braid) should then fit to get the best out of that jig or small range of jigs. The bottom line is fairly obvious, when you can spend more time with your gear working well together and in the right places, you’ll catch a lot more fish!
You should be aware that there are two factors in pitching a jig up with your rod. Firstly, it’s creating a movement of the jig in an upward direction (which can attract fish) but it’s also the way we set the jig ready to fall again correctly, which is when most ‘hits’ will occur.
Keeping your line vertical, or close to vertical, is really key with SPJ as this helps allow the best ‘fishing’ action during the jigs fall. When your line is down at 90 degrees and the jig is directly under your rod tip the rod will load and unload correctly, this helps set the jig up for the best fall. When the line is at say 45 degrees, with the jig well away from the rod tip, the rod will load and unload very differently, the jig is harder to set and will struggle to provide the best action. Getting the most out of SPJ is understanding there’s a number of parts to it, you’re often working within windows of time, so getting the right jig action is important and then doing that in front of the fish is obviously the key.
The style of MIXED PITCH JIGGING has been highly successful for me here in the U.K. It’s something I learnt whilst travelling and fishing around the Philippines in much deeper water, it mixes the slower shorter pitches of Slow Pitch Jigging with the addition of long lifts and falls and the faster pumping up of the jigs up through the water column in a similar way to Speed Jigging. Not only is this a way to search more of the water column and help hold your line more vertical, but this mixing up of pitches is proven time and time again to encourage hits, especially when fish are either less active or want to actually chase bait fish. It’s a deadly method and you’ll often see me using it in my videos over at the JOKER Jigs and Lure Youtube channel [HERE](https://www.youtube.com/@JOKERjigsandlures)
## Three good fish on three good JOKER Jigs!
### The huge importance of BRAID and how it effects your Slow Pitch Jigging in so many ways.
For successful jigging the jig needs to provide it’s best action, to do this it needs to fall freely and should be unrestricted. As previously mentioned, this is helped by keeping the line from your rod tip down to the jig as close to vertical as possible and in turn this is aided by using a fine dedicated jigging braid that cuts the water easily and avoids too much drag.
When fishing at almost any depth, the water will rub against the surface of the braid along it’s entire length, from the sea surface all the way down to your jig. This contact with the water, along with the pressure of the tidal stream, causes an unwanted drag that can slow the fall of the jig, it gets noticably worse the deeper you go. That same line drag can also effect and even stop the jigs falling fluttering and fishing action, this happens because the line will slow, hold and pull the top of the jig, tipping it into a free fall. Further to this, the sideways force and drag from the tide can push the jig away from the boat, taking your line away from vertical, this widening angle can effect the rods action and also damage the jigs free fall. Piece by piece your jigs action will suffer!
When we’re pitching the rod up we want the jig to respond and flick upwards through the water, when it slows at the top of that pitch it wants to achieve that ‘unweighted’ position, usually lying on it’s side, this hanging and relaxed position can then provide the best fishing action on the free fall back down. Remember that after an upward pitch you must then lower your rod slightly faster than the jig is falling. While the jig is falling you must avoid the line going tight to the rods tip, this will act like a handbrake and stop the jigs fluttering free fall and tip it straight into a dive, killing it’s action (which is fine when dropping in at the surface as it then gets down to the fish holding depths much quicker).
So, a dedicated Slow Pitch Jigging braid really helps improve this situation as it’s smooth and super fine, it’ll cut through the water more effectively, it’ll have less drag along its length, stay vertical longer and then allow the jig to fall more freely. Take note that you should also avoid using heavier braids with lighter jigs as this will only magnify the problem!
Jigging braids are also colour coded for depth marking. This has many uses, it allows you to fully understand the location of your jig in the water column, where you’re getting or not getting any hits and also helps you to avoid snagging on structure. As with most drift fishing on boats, it’s really valuable to fish within view of the plotter and sonar, this is so you can relate that info back to your braid markings and in turn your jig depth and position, continually noting where any takes or snags may occur! Then on your next drift you can know where to concentrate, avoid or search further into.
Once you’ve got a handle on reading the braid and depths like this, when you drop in all the way from the surface, I recommend stopping about 10m off the botttom and give a fast 3 or 4 turns on the reel handle to pull any arcing out of the braid and then have a few rod pitches. After that drop further and repeat it again at 5m off the bottom, then drop the rest of the way (unless on a snaggy wreck then stop slightly above it) and commence fishing proper. You’ll find you often get a take whilst you pause and tighten up, so it’s often worth a few cheeky pitches here and there on the way down, searching for any fish higher up. It has the added benefit of bringing the braid and jig slightly back to vertical if it’s already moving away from you.
Your braid is also a bite indicator! After pitching the rod up, you should lower it slightly faster than the jig falls, this leaves the excess braid on the surface while the jig ‘hangs’ and as it starts to fall again. Always watch your braid there on the water’s surface, just below your rod tip. Learn how long it takes for the jig to fall and pull your line tight again. When you see a change, usually a slack line just lying on the surface or sometimes a slight nudge or tightening, its often a take, so wind into it hard to set the hooks! If you miss the take, just jig again in the same location, try and tempt the fish back for another go!
There’s a bit of a knack to it, always lower the rod slightly faster than the jig takes the line back, but be aware, avoid allowing the light braid to blow back on to the top of your rod! Tip wraps are unwanted and can be costly! Using a spiral wrapped rod can help eliminate snagging the braid on a rod eye, but it’s still best to move your rod slightly to the side of the braid as it falls back onto the water. When you get more used to jigging you can time the rod lowering just a tiny fraction faster than the falling jig, you’ll stay closer to connection and have less chance of rod tangles with loads of braid hanging in the air.
It’s worth noting that all your depth readings are more accurate when your line is vertical, if you’ve streamed away say 15m to the starboard side and your line is on an angle, it’s much harder to monitor the depth correctly, not only that, the sonar image is showing the area under the boat not where your jig is! It’s also harder to get the best action, to hook into fish AND much easier to get stuck in the wreck!
Not touching your jig down onto the wreck all day long is unavoidable, but if you can learn to gauge where your jigs is and stop it a metre high you’ll lose less jigs, waste less time resetting your gear and catch less of the unwanted species, like Pout! Avoiding these regular contacts with the structure can extend the life of your braid too, the lower section gets damaged instantly by contacts with sharp structure and spinning Pout also ruin it, so it’s a good idea to keep checking the lowest few metres and trim it off a couple of times a day to keep it 100% fresh and strong. Wrecks and super fine braids just dont mix well, so contact must be avoided at all costs.
## Sunline Siglon X8 braid
### The dedicated Slow Pitch Jigging rod.
There are many variations but it’s basically a lightweight rod usually between 6 and 7 foot long that’s main object in life is to provide the correct pitch and flick of the jig. The rod is not used for pumping big fish up from the depths or for breaking out of snags, they’re generally very fragile and need to be treated with respect. The majority of SPJ rods are lightweight, hollow core, constructed with carbon or graphite and highly sensitive. There are also some good solid rods on the market that are much more durable, but sometimes lack some of the sensitivity.
Ring guides and reels seats are neat and small. Often the guides are spiral wrapped to help eleviate the blank twisting. There’s also a benefit with the spiral wrapped rods which is that the line is less likely to get snagged on the guides or rod tip.
Your choice of rod rating (or power), will be made on the weight of the jigs required to get down and fish your water correctly. The conditions on the day are usually constantly changing so don’t expect one jig weight or style to be good all day long, you’ll always be working within a range of jigs. Rods work well in the middle of their rating range (their ratings arent always that accurate but it’s a starting point to work from). As I tend to fish over 100 days a year I have the common need for a second and third setup, this allows me to have everything at it’s best and cover all senarios and seasons!
The various rod powers and the way each of them imparts it’s power and in turn ‘action’, to your various jigs is important to understand. Look at the weight and shape of the jig and the rating on the rod and try to match them, test your jigs to see how the rod works with them close to the boat (at about 3 to 4m below the surface). Just about every rod and jig has a different action and jigs need to be worked accordingly. Remember, this action beside the boat will always be reduced at greater depth, it will become slightly slower and less aggresive, again this is due to the braid drag and any arcing with the tide etc. The addition of these slight loads obviously increase with more depth and current, they reduce some of the rods power, in-effect making it slower and a bit harder to work.
In the UK we are looking at using jigs from about 40g to 120g inshore (say 20 – 50m) and then from 100g to 250g offshore (say 50 – 100m). Conditions and tide will determine what you go for on the day but your choice of set up and rod need to start roughly in the middle of these ranges. If you use a lighter rod with heavier jigs, actions will be slowed, some jigs can prefer this. If you use a heavier more powerful rod the actions will be faster but you will also get better useage when conditions are more challenging. Its always good to have options, but I’d recommended to start in the middle or slightly higher than the middle of the ranges above. Don’t be surprised after a while of starting SPJ, that you’ll soon be looking for a second set up to cover more options comfortably, I usually have a few at hand!
## Quality rods, the Palmarius P+
### The SPJ Reel
The reel is the tiny power house used to hold and retrieve line whilst jigging and for bringing your fish up to the boat, but there is also a bit more to it. A good quality small, well balanced, over head reel is best and ideally with a good rate of retrieve. A strong and smooth drag is also important but it really needs a nice powerful retrieve. This is useful because the rod is just too light and cannot be used to pump and lift the fish up, remember to just keep the rod low and use the reel smoothly like a winch. Having a 100% full spool of braid also helps increase the retrieve rate and allows for better working of the jig up through the water column, it also makes it easier to get into a smooth rhythm. When fully loaded just 1 turn can grab close to 1m of line.
Whilst jigging, remember to fish with one hand cupping the rod and reel and one hand ALWAYS on the reel handle. Although we do strike, it’s not enough on it’s own as the rod is so soft and short, it’s the winding super fast into a fish that tightens everything up and initially helps set the hooks. It’s also worth noting that there’s often very little pressure between the fish and the hooks at the time of the take, this is because the fish is hitting the jig as it falls or ‘hangs’. Yes, it may hook it’s self, but time is of the essence, keep your hand on the handle, get winding and lift your rod firmly and make sure!
### Jigs
So, unlike a lure that swims in a steady and straightish line, your slow pitch jig’s movement can be much more erratic looking like a wounded or dying fish. This can attract fish that are less focused on feeding, as well as the harder feeding fish. Jigs will mostly get hit by fish when on the drop and whilst stationary, basically before or after a lifting pitch with the rod or during or after a fall.
Jig selection is important and it’s easy to spend your hard earned cash on jigs that look good but aren’t actually that practical or productive. In the past I’ve been guilty of this and used to have dozens of various shaped jigs, most never got used more than once or twice! Finding practical and effective patterns is key and that’s what I’ve acheived with JOKER. Currently the main range is just 4 jigs in various colours and weights and these give anglers various options and cover all senarios.
Various weight and shape jigs will move differently through the water, not only on the uplift but as they fall. Some create better actions but can be prone to streaming away more quickly, especially when tide or wind come into play.
The last thing you want is to own great rod jigging rod and reel combo and then use an unsuitable jig (or braid) that streams off into the distance before you even hit the bottom! Maybe that particular style of jig is ok on a calm day and at slack water, but 9 times out of 10 there’s some wind to move the boat away from that perfect drift. Also remember that there’s some epic fishing to be had when the tide is strong and fish are feeding hard, often holding tight to the bottom or over structure. I think it’s actually the BEST time and **it’s a total myth that jigging is for neap tides and slack water!**
My slimmer JOKER jigs look more like traditional ‘speed’ jigs but they actually fish really well ‘slowly’ and with the ‘long fall’ technique as well as with the faster movements! The highly versatile JOKER [Slammer](https://www.jokerjigsandlures.co.uk/product/slammer-slow-pitch-jig/ "Slammer Slow Pitch Jig") and [Cobra](https://www.jokerjigsandlures.co.uk/product/cobra-slow-pitch-jig/ "Cobra Slow Pitch Jig") could actually be called MIXED PITCH JIGS. They’re slightly unsymmetrical but punch and dart well, they also have a various other benefits. They get down through the water column very quickly, they catch less drag, not only with the tidal stream, but whilst actually jigging, so they tend to load the rod less. These are some of the key factors that are helpful in staying vertical for longer especially on days with bigger tides or wind.

### Timing and boat position is critical!
The timing of your ‘pitching’, ‘falling’ and ‘drop in’ are also important. We need to know where the fish are because the more time with your jig spent in the ‘strike zone’ with your line vertical means more fish to the boat. The sonar screen and knowledgeable skipper can be helping with this.
On my charter boat, [Silver Halo](https://www.silverhalocharters.co.uk/ "Silver Halo"), when we locate those hot spots of fish my drifts will obviously concentrate more to that area and the start of the drift will be positioned to allow for jigs to drop in just ahead of the fish.
If you’re fishing in challenging conditions when the boat is being held or pushed by the wind and the tide and jig is going away from you quickly, use a heavier, slimmer, smoother profiled jig. Also consider using a more powerful, longer rod. However, sometimes it can be impossible to stay vertical for long so ideally the skipper needs to shorten the drift and start a bit tighter to the structure and fish, allowing for any angles that lines may take and position the boat accordingly. This scenario with boat position and larger angles is often more common with lure fishing on tougher days, but when you’re dead keen on jigging it’s surprising what conditions you can still catch fish in!
Another top tip is to rotate with other Slow Pitch Jigging anglers across the stern, this is ideal on my small group charters onboard [Silver Halo](https://www.silverhalocharters.co.uk/ "Silver Halo"). Simply take it in turns to throw the jig up-tide (normally the way I set up a drift it will be throwing the jig to the port side) so it then falls back toward the boat, you will gain precious vertical time as you fish the jig across the stern and off to the starboard side, moving across the deck as you do it. Once again, the ideal scenario is to make sure this vertical window of fishing time is timed with the ‘strike zone’, you want your jig to arrive in the fish holding area in its best shape and line most vertical! Once it looks like it’s streamed away, say about 10m or so away from vertical, get it back up, reposition and throw it uptide and fish again, either that or wait for the next drift. When fishing in just 35m to 70m this doesnt take too long to achieve, however, when fishing in over 250m it’s a bit of a nightmare, but each day is different and it’s all part of the fun (or frustration).
So together, having a focused skipper, using team work, quality tackle (set up correctly), the understanding of Slow Pitch Jigging starts to grow, these are real game changers. When it all comes together you’ll catch a lot more fish and you really just can’t beat it!

 Fished with joker jigs for about 7 months now ..from Matts charter boat Silver Halo,can’t rate these jigs highly enough.Yesterdays... read more trip on another charter from Brighton and using the Imp jigs (blu/head lime) absolutely smashed a dozen bass (all returned mostly sizeable) ..the catch rate compared to the other 7 anglers on the trip was conclusive ..Joker IMP smashed it out of the park.

 I had previously brought a slammer jig in acid orange from a local tackle shop to try, love the way... read more these jigs perform. Get down nice and quick but also have great movement .  First time using the mayhem jig and my friend was using traditional lures first drop for me on a inshore... read more reef 6lb bass I had 4 bass in the 4 to 6 range my friend had nothing next drift I had 2 more bass similar size and a bonus pollock my mate nothing the next drift I give him a mayhem jig bang stright on he had 2 and I had 3 bass it was like it till the tide dropped off all I can say is they out fish all the traditional lures best about iv proven this on many times in the past well done Matt for putting these on the market ups the fishing 100%

 Excellent service from Matt! I wanted a slightly lighter spj rod and so went with the p1 pairing it with... read more the 100g and 130g slammers and was not disappointed! Great feel to the rod providing a nice action to the jig.
The setup with the eyes helps massively too as once you've had a rod that the eyes run straight and tangle for a past time this makes life much easier especially if you have a short window to stay vertical!!
This was a last minute purchase as was holding off as I didn't think I could improve my spj setup and my only regret was not pulling the trigger sooner! Great rod 😁

 I bought the power 2 rod as a second slow pitch rod with the intent of it handling heavier jigs... read more than my current SHIMANO grappler. Took it for its first outing and I am more than happy, amazing feel, light, responsive and with plenty of backbone to stop the crash dives from the pollack. Comfortably handled jigs up to 200g (sure it could go heavier but no need for that around here) and did exactly what I hoped, very happy.

 After years of hearing how effective SPJ was and watching many a you tube video but not actually steering away... read more from the norm. I contacted Matt and asked if I could jump on board Silver Halo for a trip and some tuition. I took the opportunity to use the onboard kit and Wow I was not disappointed. Matt put us on the fish and with a couple of drifts under his watchful eye and a few pointers taken on board, I was soon amongst some quality hard fighting double figure Pollock. The Joker Slammer was the jig of choice in varying colours throughout the day. A cracking day on board Silver Halo. I have since purchased a quantity of gear from Matt, to get my SPJ fishing off the mark. Thanks again Matt for converting me from the norm.

 I went out in my boat late November last year for a days lure fishing, which started with couple of... read more small pollock and “eff-ing” pouting to standard long traces with Skerries eels but as the tide slackened I reached for the slow jigs. This was the first time I’d been out in decent conditions since I’d bought some of the Joker Slammer jigs and was looking forward to trying them,,, oh my word do they work well! Cornish cod are not as rare as you would think,,, if you get lucky. Three drifts across the reef yielded cod of 11lb 4oz and 10lb 12oz and finally one of about 5lb which I put back. I moved to get away from the cod (not something that happens very often) as I had plenty of fish for the table and second drift on a wreck gave me a good pollock on the drop! All caught on 200g Cotton Candy Slammers in 180 feet of water on a biggish tide, it was the perfect jig for this style of fishing yesterday. I loved how quickly it got down to the deck on a fairly fast drift and the “feel” of it working was superb. Wish I could add pictures to the review, stunning fish! Just got some of the new Black Mack variants, can’t wait to get out to try them too.🛥️🎣🐟 🦄😃

 New to SPJ …after a couple of trips out with Silver Halo charters and some expert guidance from Matt ,I... read more used his own SPJ set ups on his boat.
The preferred choice was the 130-acid orange Slammer ..3 takes and 3 fish!Second jig was a 170 black Mack slammer ..wow 2bass and another 2 pollock !The catch results say it all if fished correctly …I’m still learning a lot about SPJ but am thoroughly hooked!😂

## Matt’s Deep Dive into Slow and Mixed Pitch Jigging (15 minute read).
## **Overview**
Productive Slow Pitch Jigging is effectively a system made up of many parts. It’s a game of fine tuning and adapting, getting them all to work together to create the best possible action from your jig and then making sure you’re doing it whilst that jig is in view of any fish! I believe the jig is the first part of that system. The right jig for the job varies through the day as the depths, weather conditions and tides change. The shape and weight of the jig need to be suitable to work properly in the conditions that you find right there in front of you, the rest of your gear (particularly the rod) should then fit to get the best out of that jig or small range of jigs. The bottom line is fairly obvious, when you can spend more time with your gear working well together and in the right places, you’ll catch a lot more fish!
So, unlike a lure that swims in a steady and straightish line, your jig’s movement can be much more erratic and can attract fish that are less focused on feeding as well as the harder feeding fish. Jigs will mostly get hit by fish when on the drop and whilst stationary, basically before or after a lifting pitch with the rod or during or after a longer fall.
Keeping the line vertical, or close to vertical, is really key with SPJ (I’ll keep mentioning that here!!) as this allows best action during it’s fall. You should be aware that there are two factors in pitching a jig up with your rod. Firstly, it’s creating a movement of the jig in an upward direction (which can attract fish) but it’s also the way we set the jig ready to fall again correctly, which is when most ‘hits’ then occur.
The style of MIXED PITCH JIGGING has been highly successful for me here in the U.K. It’s something I learnt whilst travelling and fishing around the Philippines in much deeper water, it mixes the slower shorter pitches of Slow Pitch Jigging with the addition of long lifts and falls and the faster pumping up of the jigs up through the water column in a similar way to Speed Jigging. Not only is this a way to search more of the water column but this mixing up of pitches is proven time and time again to encourage hits, especially when fish are less active. It’s just deadly and you’ll often see me using it in my videos over at the JOKER Jigs and Lure Youtube channel [HERE](https://www.youtube.com/@JOKERjigsandlures)
three good fish on three good JOKER Jigs!## **The huge importance of BRAID and how it can effect your Slow Pitch Jigging in so many ways.**
When fishing at almost any depth, the water rubs against the surface of the braid along it’s length, from the sea surface all the way down to the short leader connected to your jig. This contact with the water, along with the pressure of the tidal stream, causes an unwanted drag that can slow the fall of the jig. It gets noticably worse the deeper you go. That line drag can also effect and even stop the jigs fluttering as it falls, because the line holds and pulls the top of the jig, tipping it into a free fall. The sideways drag from the tide can also push the jig away from the boat, taking your line away from vertical, again messing with the jigs free falling fishing action.
For good SPJ the jig needs to fall freely and ideally it should be unrestricted in this. Part of acheiving this is by keeping the line from your rod tip down to the jig as close to vertical as possible.
When we’re pitching the rod up we want the jig to respond and flick upwards through the water, when it slows at the top of that pitch it wants to achieve that ‘unweighted’ position, usually lying on it’s side, this hanging and relaxed position can then provide the best fishing action on the free fall back down. If the drag loading is high on the braid it can slow the jig and tilt it away from the ‘floating’ position, which will then ruin it’s unrestricted free fall. Remember to do your part by lowering your rod slightly faster than the jig is falling. While the jig is falling you must avoid the line going tight to the rods tip, this will stop the jigs fluttering free fall and tip it into a dive, which you really want to avoid, unless of course you’re dropping in from the surface.
So, a dedicated Slow Pitch Jigging braid really helps improve this situation as it’s smooth and super fine, it’ll cut through the water more effectively, it’ll have less drag along its length, stay vertical longer and then the jig can fall more freely. Take note that you should also avoid using heavier braids with lighter jigs as this only magnifies the problem!
Jigging braids are also colour coded for depth marking. This allows you to fully understand the location of your jig in the water column, where you’re getting or not getting any hits and helps you to avoid snagging on structure. It’s really valuable to fish within view of the plotter and sonar, this is so you can relate that info back to your braid markings, jig depth and position, continually noting where takes or snags may occur! Then on you’re next drift you can know where to concentrate, avoid or search further into.
Once you’ve got a handle on reading the braid and depths like this, when you drop in all the way from the surface, I recommend stopping 10m off the botttom and give a fast 3 or 4 turns on the reel handle to pull any arcing out of the braid and then have a few rod pitches. After that drop further and repeat it again at 5m off the bottom, then drop the rest of the way (unless on a snaggy wreck then stop slightly above it) and commence fishing proper. You’ll find you often get a take whilst you pause and tighten up so it’s often worth a few cheeky pitches here and there on the way down, searching for fish higher up.
Your braid is also a bite indicator! Whilst jigging, after pitching the rod up, as the jig ‘hangs’ and then starts to fall again, watch your braid on the water’s surface just below your rod tip. Learn how long it takes for the jig to fall and pull your line tight again. When you see a change, usually a slack line just lying on the surface its often a take, so wind into it hard to set the hooks!
Always lower the rod slightly faster than the jig takes the line back, but be aware, avoid allowing the light braid to blow back on to the top of your rod! Tip wraps are unwanted and can be costly! Using a spiral wrapped rod can help eliminate snagging the braid on a rod eye, but it’s still best to move your rod slightly to the side of the braid as it falls back onto the water. When you get more used to jigging you can time the rod lowering just a tiny fraction faster than the falling jig, you’ll stay closer to connection and have less chance of rod tangles with loads of braid hanging in the air.
It’s worth noting that all your depth readings are more accurate when your line is vertical, if you’ve streamed away say 15m to the starboard side and your line is on an angle, it’s much harder to monitor the depth correctly, not only that, the sonar image is showing the area under the boat not where your jig is! It’s also harder to hook into fish and easier to get stuck in the wreck!
So not touching your jig on the wreck all day long is unavoidable, but if you can learn to gauge where you are and stop it a metre or two high you’ll spend less time losing jigs and resetting your gear. When your getting more confident and avoiding these contacts with the structure you can then also reduce the length of your leader to about 4 or 5 foot, but remember, wrecks and super fine braids just dont mix well!
Sunline Siglon X8 braid## **The dedicated Slow Pitch Jigging rod.**
There are many variations but it’s basically a lightweight rod around 6 foot long that’s main object in life is to provide the correct pitch and flick of the jig. The rod is not used for pumping big fish up from the depths or for breaking out of snags, they’re generally very fragile and need to be treated with respect.
When your rod creates the correct action onto the jig it helps set it up for the most effective free fall. Your choice of rod rating or power, will be made on the weight of the jigs required to get down and fish correctly (those jigs to suit the depth and type of water conditions). The conditions on the day are usually constantly changing so don’t expect one jig weight or style to be good all day long, you’ll always be working within a range of jigs. Rods should work well within the middle of their range (their ratings arent always that accurate but it’s a starting point to work from). As I tend to fish over 100 days a year I have the common need for a second and third setup to have everything at it’s best and cover all senarios and seasons!
The various rod powers or ratings and the way each of them imparts it’s power and in turn ‘action’, to your various jigs is important to understand. Look at the weight and shape of the jig and the rating on the rod and test your jigs to see how the rod works with them close to the boat (at about 3 to 4m below the surface). Just about every rod and jig has a different action and jigs need to be worked accordingly. Remember, this action beside the boat will always be reduced at greater depth, it will become slightly slower and less aggresive, again this is due to the braid drag and any arcing with the tide etc. The addition of these slight loads obviously increase with more depth and current, they reduce some of the rods power, in-effect making it slower and a bit harder to work.
In the UK we are looking at using jigs from about 40g to 120g inshore (upto 40 – 50m) and then from 100g to 250g offshore (50 – 100m). Conditions and tide will determine what you go for on the day but your choice of set up and rod need to start in the middle of these ranges. If you use a lighter rod with heavier jigs, actions will be slowed, some jigs can prefer this. If you use a heavier more powerful rod the actions will be faster but you will also get better useage when conditions are more challenging. Its always good to have options, but I’d recommended to start in the middle or slightly higher than the middle of the ranges above. Don’t be surprised after a while of starting SPJ, that you’ll soon be looking for a second set up to cover more options comfortably! I usually have a few at hand!
## **The SPJ reel.**
The reel is the tiny power house used to hold and retrieve line whilst jigging and for bringing your fish up to the boat, but there is also a bit more to it. A good quality small, well balanced, over head reel is best and ideally with a good rate of retrieve. A strong and smooth drag is certainly important but it really needs a nice powerful retrieve. This is important because the rod is just too light and cannot be used to pump and lift the fish up, remember to just keep the rod low and use the reel smoothly like a winch. Having a 100% full spool also helps increase the retrieve rate and allows for better working of the jig up through the water column and make it easier to get into a smooth rhythm. When fully loaded just 1 turn can grab close to 1m of line.
Whilst jigging, remember to fish with one hand cupping the rod and reel and one hand ALWAYS on the reel handle. Although we do strike, it’s not enough on it’s own as the rod is so soft and short, it’s the winding super fast into a fish that tightens everything up and initially helps set the hooks. It’s also worth noting that there’s often very little pressure between the fish and the hooks at the time of the take, this is because the fish is hitting the jig as it falls or ‘hangs’. Yes, it may hook it’s self, but time is of the essence, keep your hand on the handle, get winding and lift your rod firmly and make sure!

## **Jigs.**
Jig selection is not just about finding what could be visually pleasing in the tackle box. Various weight and shape jigs fish and move differently through the water. Some create better actions but can also be prone to streaming away more, especially when tide or wind come into play.
Don’t waste your hard earnt money on a great rod and reel just to use unsuitable braid and jig that streams off into the distance. Maybe that particular style jig is ok on a calm day at slack water, but theres often some wind to move the boat away from that perfect drift! Also remember that there’s some epic fishing to be had when the tide is strong and fish are holding tight to the bottom, **it’s a total myth that jigging is for neaps and slack water!**
My slimmer jigs that look more like traditional ‘speed’ jigs fish really well ‘slowly’ and with the ‘long fall’ technique as well as faster! The highly versatile JOKER [Slammer](https://www.jokerjigsandlures.co.uk/product/slammer-slow-pitch-jig/ "Slammer Slow Pitch Jig") and [Cobra](https://www.jokerjigsandlures.co.uk/product/cobra-slow-pitch-jig/ "Cobra Slow Pitch Jig") slow pitch jigs are still slightly unsymmetrical but punch and dart well, they also have a benefit as they can often can get down through the water column quicker, catch less drag not only with the tidal stream but whilst actually jigging, it’s some of these key factors that are all helpful in staying vertical for longer.

## **Timing.**
The timing of your ‘pitching’, ‘falling’ and ‘drop in’ are also important. We need to know where the fish are and the more time with your jig spent in the ‘strike zone’ with your line vertical means more fish to the boat. The sonar screen and knowledgeable skipper can be helping with this.
When we locate where those hot spots of fish are, my drifts will obviously concetrate more to that area and will be timed to allow for those jigs to drop in just ahead of them.
If you’re fishing in challenging conditions when the boat is being held or pushed by the wind and the tide is going away from you, consider using a more powerful, longer rod. Possibly use a heavier, slimmer, smoother profiled jig. However, sometimes it can be impossible to stay vertical for long so ideally the skipper needs to time the drift a bit tighter to the structure, allow for the angle of your line and position the boat accordingly. This scenario with boat position and larger angles is often more common with lure fishing as it’s being used on the more extreme days when the lines are streaming further and being vertical is not as important.
Another top tip is to rotate with other Slow Pitch Jigging anglers across the stern, this is ideal on my small group charters onboard [Silver Halo](https://www.silverhalocharters.co.uk/ "Silver Halo"). Simply take it in turns to throw the jig up-tide (normally the way I set up a drift it will be to the port side) so it then falls back toward the boat, you will gain precious vertical time as you fish the jig past the stern and off to the starboard side, moving across the deck as you do it. Once again, the ideal scenario is to make sure this vertical window of fishing time is timed with the ‘strike zone’, you want your jig to arrive in the fish holding area in its best shape and most vertical! Once it looks like it’s streamed away, say about 10m away from vertical, get it back up, reposition and throw it uptide and repeat. When fishing in just 35m to 70m this doesnt take too long to acheive, however, when fishing in over 250m it’s a bit of a nightmare, but each day is different and it’s all part of the fun (or frustration).
Together, having a focused skipper, using team work, quality tackle and set up and understanding Slow Pitch Jigging are real game changers. When it all comes together you just can’t beat it!
## **Good Slow Pitch Jigging is the sum of many parts.**
Basically, getting as many parts of your set up right is key. There’s a fine line between getting it bang on or fishing something that is not quite right and you’re just snagging and losing jigs with no rewards, we’ve all been there!
When conditions become too challenging and lines just stream away too quickly, just remember to try and drop in at the very last minute so you literally land your jig right on the fish, its deadly. If that’s not possible and the skippers not getting the boat close enough, revert back to traditional lure fishing techniques, OK, it’s not so focused or fun but it’s still very popular and effective

Useful at any time but great in the more challenging conditions as it’s streamline and it gets down fast.

Imp: An excellent profile providing a smaller bite size chunk to the more fussy fish. With a short slide and good flutter action!
**WHICH STYLE?**
Shorter and wider than the Slammer and Cobra but still fairly streamline.
A more typical slow pitch profile providing a smaller bite size chunk to the more fussy fish.
It’s drop in speed is slower and loads the rod slightly more but it has an excellent flutter.
**WHEN & WHY?**
It’s benefits are it’s chompable size and excellent flutter and short slides.
The downside is, it’ll stream away from you a bit more quickly in tougher conditions, therefore it’s useage is more on the easier days without too much breeze.
**HOW TO FISH?**
It’s less of a ‘mixed pitch’ jig and more of a slow jig so it’s shorter rhythms and long slow lifts and little twitches that get the most hits. However, it will work up through the water column well with short fast pitches.
It’s similar to the Mayhem jig so avoid using the long fast lifts.

Mayhem: The least streamline of the current JOKER range but it produces the most intense of flutters. Deadly for bass!
**WHICH STYLE?**
The least streamline of the current JOKER range but it produces the most intense of flutters.
Due to its anglular shape and blunt head it loads the rod a lot for it’s weight and only punches and slides short distances.
The plus sides, it’ll swerve and dart erratically and drop back with the best flutter you’ll find anywhere.
**WHEN & WHY?**
We’ve found the Mayhem so good that the weight range has been quickly expanded so we can use it more often!
Best on easier days when the boats not getting pushed of it’s drift.
The reason you’ll use this jig is for its bite sized profile and excellent flutter, both are key when fish like bass are not feeding hard. This jig will get hits when live bait is stuggling!
**HOW TO FISH?**
Very similar to the IMP, so medium and long slow lifts and fall backs followed by little twitches get the best results.
If fish are present and need more encouragement, it works well with short quick pitches up through the water column.
It’s the best bass jig I know of and ALL the JOKER jigs will catch bass!

Our return policy allows you to return an item within 30 days of receiving it.
To return a product, it must be in the same condition as when you received it. It must be unused, with any tags and in its original packaging. Receipts or proof of purchase must also be included.

Occasionally rods can be damaged whilst shipping. If this occurs please take photos of the rod, the rod tube and internal packaging as these will be required by the courier in order to process a claim. Please inspect rod tubes carefully on collection or delivery. When additional shipping is required for rods it would be considered fair that the cost is met by both the client and JOKER.

**Content:**
The JOKER Slammer slow pitch jig is a highly versatile, streamline, quick drop jig. It’s great at avoiding streaming away when the tide and boat are at odds.
It’ll catch pretty much any predatory fish, but most commonly cod, bass and pollock. It works well using any speed and size pitch so should really be referred to as a ‘mixed pitch’ jig. Typical slow pitch actions with short smooth pitches, medium or long and high pitches all work really well, but it’s also great for working up through the water column faster. This is a great way to encourage fish to move in and attack.
When set up correctly, a typical pitch of the rod fires the jig upwards and onto its side, from there it hovers slightly before a slow horizontal, flat fall and occasional flutter.
Watch for hits at the top of the pitch, during the fall and any pauses in the slow jigs movement.
Like all JOKER Jigs, the Slammer is also often hit on the drop as it falls into any fish holding zones. It’s also common to be picked up off the bottom. Always be tuned into you’re braid and be ready for ‘slack line’ bites!

The JOKER Mayhem slow pitch jig is a feisty little jig with an aggressive look but it’s actually fighting for survival because big fish just want to eat it!
It has a small and angular profile and is available in 60g, 80g, 110g, 150g and 180g and currently in 5 great colour schemes.
This jig was a winner at mid range depths and closer inshore but with the recent addition of 110g, 150g and 180g it’s now really useful and highly effective over the offshore wrecks too. Now often used mid-channel and on calmer days, it’s proven deadly for larger more fussy species.
The JOKER Mayhem slow pitch jig has a killer action when the rod imparts quick short pitches, making it dart and carve before it falls back with an intense and irregular flutter, vibration and flash. The JOKER Imp slow pitch jig is short, smooth, punchy and versatile.
It’s a bit wider and shorter than the Slammer jig but it’s still fairly streamline with smooth edges.
This slow jig is easy to use with a mixture of techniques. Use short sharp pitches that flick the jig upwards so it then falls sideways and alternate that with much slower longer lift and falls. This jig is all about the falling flutter so make sure you’re allowing the best of it.
You can fish this slow pitch jig along the bottom and it’s most useful in low wind and less tide situations, however, don’t be scared about jigging it up through the water column using the short sharp pitches, effectively searching the lower depths and up into the fish that maybe higher above the structure.
The Imp slow pitch jig is a great bite sized jig for all predatory fish, especially cod and bass who love the flashy and vibey flutterings. It’s currently it’s available in 80g 100g 120g and 150g weights and 5 killer colour combos.

Super Fry Thin lures are beautiful little casting metals that have a profile very similar to the JOKER Mayhem slow jig, but obviously smaller, lighter and much thinner.
When cast and retrieved this lure has a wide wobble action and can be used in both fresh or saltwater, from the shore, kayak or boat.
This metal lure can also be fished along the bottom, up over structure and around weed, using the lift and fall technique. Use the rod to get a good long uplift and then allow the lure to fall back on a slack line, fluttering back down to the bottom again. It’s the same method used with many soft plastics, it’s deadly and predatory fish often pick up the lure off the bottom.
Thirdly, the Super Fry Thin lure also works really well as a light vertical jig, where it actually excels. Quick, short pitches of the lure rod create excellent darting actions and as it falls back on the slack line, it has a flutter to die for. A highly versatile mini slow pitch jig!

These HEAVY DUTY Jigging Assist Hooks are made from a high carbon steel, they’re medium to heavy weight and super sharp.
Much like the standard JOKER Jigging Assist hooks, they’ve a wide gape that’s angled in slightly to improve strength, penetration and hold. They’re also chemically sharpened with a rust-resistant coating and double forged for heavy use.
The assist cords are of a fine gauge but at 500lb test they’re super strong. Each pair of assists comes rigged with a 304 stainless solid ring and ready to fit.
These are the perfect components for any of the bigger, heavier jigs, slow pitch jigs and speed jigs and for much larger species and overseas fishing trips.
You can also up the size of the standar 4/0 hooks that are supplied on the 250g and 300g Slammer jigs if travelling with them overseas.
\#6/0 with 500lb medium length assist cord (recommended for 250g and up), 2 pairs of hooks per pack, plus 2 super strong split rings and a heavy duty swivel.

#### Handing ‘Cruiser Shadow’ Slow Pitch Jigging Rod
The Handing ‘Cruiser Shadow’ Slow Pitch Jigging Rod is an incredibly good value jigging rod.
##### constructed using 30+40T Toray Carbon Fiber

The great price of this rod would suggest that it could be just another cheap entry level rod and a little lacking in some departments, but to be totally honest, it’s much more than that. These jigging rods feel great in hand and their action ticks the required boxes. They look neat, have a top quality finish and are really well put together. On top of that they’re fitted out with top quality Fuji components.
The action is smooth if a little steely, but they do work jigs very well and are not horribly stiff and lifeless like some of the other sub £200 rods that are currently on the market! Of course when compared alongside much higher priced SPJ rods they may lacks some of the smooth plushness through the action and recoil, but they do have a nice progressive curve and send your jigs in the right direction. They’ve recently been tested and of course ‘proven’ onboard Silver Halo and clients have enjoyed catching well with them!
Crafted with top-tier components such as **Fuji DPS/TCS reel seat** and **Fuji K-series A-ring guides**, along with the **Toray carbon fiber blank**. It delivers unmatched strength, sensitivity, comfort, and performance.
It’s a very ergonomic rod featuring durable, lightweight, high-density **EVA grips**. It’s no problem working jigs all day, the grips are correctly contoured for optimal comfort.
Designed specifically for saltwater inshore/off shore fishing, this 2-piece rod is ideal for targeting bass, pollock, cod, bream and anything else that hits jigs or small metal lures!
Please see the table below for my **own** guidiance on the ratings of each Cruiser Shadow jigging rod. I like to fish as light as possible so the Medium Light (ML) is my recommendation for inshore, occasionally offshore and on clamer days. This rod can still handle the 180g Cobra and 170g Slammer jigs, particularly as they’re nice and streamline and not overloading the rod. The Medium (M) rod is great for offshore and more challenging condiotions so man enough to get you comfortable in the 150g to 280g range.

The MPX manufacturing method, which assembles the raw threads at a high density, is adjusted for each diametre assuing the very best product. This allows for high levels of abrasion and impact resistance. In addition, the HDX manufacturing method, which precisely assembles the raw threads with high tension, achieves strong stabilization and high sensitivity throught the braids length.
- **Gosen’s unique special coating**
Gosen’s unique resin processing and silicone coating reduce color fading, improves abrasion resistance and also reduces line breakage. The surface is smooth and the line slides through the guides perfectly!!
- **Marking specifically for jigging**
Uses a highly visible colour scheme and colour pattern that protects the line from attack by fish with sharp teeth.
